Blackwater Outdoor Experiences: New Paths for Adolescents and Their Families

The trip begins with 8 days of sea kayaking through Everglades National Park and along the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. There is an abundance of wildlife to be seen including many species of birds and fish, manatees, alligators and crocodiles, dolphins, rays, turtles, and shark. Fishing poles are welcome, but a fishing license is required. Licenses can be purchased at the Marina in Flamingo, our starting point, once we arrive in the Everglades. After kayaking, we will spend the day snorkeling on the Coral Reef at John Pennekamp National Park in Key Largo before we drive to Northern Florida for a 48-hour solo experience. Each student spends 48 hours on their own in the woods to reflect on their experiences and their situation at home, and, working with the staff, develops a plan for their return home. Solo is followed by Rock Climbing in Georgia for a couple days before heading back to Richmond to meet up with his/her family.
The 14-day trip to Florida includes the kayaking, snorkeling, and rock climbing activities as described above without the solo experience.
To be anounced.
The trip begins with a day of team building and problem solving activities on a ropes course at Camp Horseshoe in St. George, WV. We will then spend three days canoeing on the North Branch of the Potomac. There is much wildlife along the river including deer, bald eagles, osprey, and many kinds of fish. After canoeing we will spend 8 days backpacking in the Otter Creek Wilderness Area and along the North Fork Trail, both part of the Monongahela National Forest. We will complete a solo experience following hiking. Each student spends 48 hours on their own in the woods to reflect on their experiences and their situation at home, and, working with the staff, develops a plan for his return home. We will then do some rock climbing at Seneca Rocks, some of the best climbing in the East. Finishing up with a day of caving in a nearby wild cave before returning to Richmond. West Virginia provides ample opportunities for great swimming, views, wildlife, and solitude.
The 14-day trip to West Virginia is similar to the 21-day program with fewer days for hiking and no Solo Experience.
The 14-day trip to Colorado begins with a 40-hour drive to Bluff, Utah for 2 days rafting on the San Juan River. The San Juan offers leisurely paddling and an abundance of Anasazi and Native American history and culture, as well as wonderful geology. We will then travel to southern Colorado to the Lizard Head Wilderness Area, part of the San Juan Mountains of the Rockies, for 5 days of hiking. Here we will summit a 14,000-foot peak called Wilson Peak, before showering and getting in the vans for the long drive back to Virginia.
*Blackwater Outdoor Experiences provides transportation to each trip location. We will meet at the office of BOE in Virginia prior to each trip.
